Contrast Furniture Series

Project type

Furniture Design

Date

September 2025

Location

FABI Building on the UP Campus

The objective was to create a furniture piece using any alien invasive wood species for the fictional Forestry and Agriculture Biotechnology Institute (FABI) II located on the UP campus, all while embracing a South African theme. The design of my furniture collection contrasts the rapid growth of invasive trees with the slow yet harmful impact of the pathogen Teratosphearia epicoccoides on eucalyptus leaves. Conceptually, the furniture's shape is a large-scale interpretation of the pathogen's microscopic structure. The legs feature a chiselled texture that directly references and complements South Africa's rich heritage of incorporating bold textures and patterns into its designs.
